About the Project
The Rhythms of Change project was part of a residency at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University that occurred in the Fall of 2011. The project's impetus was tied to the growth of the Latino population in North Carolina, an increase of 1000% over the last 10 years. This explosive growth introduced a new set of cultural elements into the state's already rich mix.
The Rhythms of Change project was based on the premise that when people migrate they bring elements of their cultural heritage with them. One of those essential elements is the music of their native land. Through photography and video, this project looks at various forms of Latin music being performed both publicly and privately in North Carolina and the role the music plays in the lives of the state's Latino population.
