In November of 2008, the residents of
El Ciruelo, Oaxaca, celebrated when Barak
Obama was elected President of the Untited
States. As Afro-Mexicans they felt pride in
knowing that an African American had been
elected president of their powerful neighbor
to the north. There was even talk of renting a
bus to attend the innauguration. That plan
dissolved when the difficulty of crossing the
border was explained by the local priest.
However, several months later, one
resident, Efrén Mayren, received an
inivitation to perform at the Smithsonian
Folklife Festival and Washington DC. He
attended with his group and performed this
song that he wrote for Barak Obama.
